Both the student and instructor manual states: :"• The rescuer's priority is to get the victim to the surface safely" so why are we demonstrating all of this delay in doing so? As a Public Safety Diver Instructor I am calling BS on this entire video.

Forget SMBs - just use a DSMB with a proper reel instead of a stupidly small easily lost hand reel! Geez... (BSAC Advanced Instructor)

  • @AbyssalPlain

No way - too easy to lose grip of the reel so instead firmly attach a loose reel to your wrist using a lanyard before you inflate the buoy. Too many confusing hand signals in the demo. (BSAC Advanced Instructor 1719)

Is that skill still being taught? What problem does it solve? You can perfectly well breathe from a freeflowing regulator without removing half of the mouthpiece and thus risking inhaling water and adding stress to an already stressfull situation. For a recreational single-tank diver: 1. signal your buddy/guide/team. Eventually switch to your octopus if not freeflowing too. 2. Begin ascent as a team, respect ascent speed. 3. Monitor SPG and be prepared for OOG (assume your tank will last 1-2 minutes or maybe even less). Obviously, dont panic, but dont waste your time at depth either. Simple, effective, saves your life. Safe dives everybody

Interestingly, most instructors do not recommend all that setup. They normally suggest that your reel and SMB should be connected already. It's easy to drop things especially if you are not at the bottom of the ocean and are doing a safety stop. However, the divers buoyancy was on point! I'd be interested in any thoughts on this.

When firing a DSMB on a 'real' (non-training) dive, have it connected. For practise, have them separate. The extra little bit of task loading helps refine buoyancy control + positioning in a buddy/team environment.

I started the course a few weeks ago. Working on the academic portion first and some of the math is extremely challenging at first. I made the right choice starting here and working my way up. I enjoy the learning process much more in a more relaxed environment. Whenever I do XR Nitrox I will go in much better prepared.

Thanks for your valuable comment! From a training approach, we usually teach skills in a controllable environment like a pool/confined water first where the impact on the environment is minimal and beginner students have the chance to practice in a stable position first. Later, training skills get more refined and will be repeated in neutral buoyancy in the open water. The skill videos are meant to show the students which skills they are going to learn in their next pool session, therefore we show those kneeking on the ground at first, but later on skills like no mask swim are shown in a neutrally buoyant position, which is correct from the learning approach. Be assured that we follow our own Blue Oceans code where SSI commits to execute sustainable diving practices and protects the environment as much as possible.

Thank you for posting these on UA-cam. I watched most of these live on Facebook, but it is nice to see them again. As an instructor, having your own gear is a must. I purchased all my equipment shortly after open water certification and have been using the same high end equipment for more than 20 years. However, nothing lasts forever. I also have newer equipment that I use but the point is that the BCD and regulator is life support equipment and proper maintenance is essential. I am a certified service technician but not for Mares. I wish I could get the training, but I do not work for a Mares dealer, so I cannot register for a class. I do own a full set of relatively new Mares equipment.

Great program. Good that it was added. Perhaps this was not always true but Science of Diving is a requirement from Divemaster and up. Perhaps not all crossover candidates to SSI from other agencies will have it. I do not know the requirements of other agencies, so I cannot say for certain. No skipping or cutting corners with SSI! Thank you for posting this.
